{"id":120436,"date":"2019-05-26T08:10:55","date_gmt":"2019-05-26T08:10:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/aladdin-review-guy-ritchies-live-action-disney-remake-dazzles-surprises-cnet\/"},"modified":"2019-05-26T08:10:55","modified_gmt":"2019-05-26T08:10:55","slug":"aladdin-review-guy-ritchies-live-action-disney-remake-dazzles-surprises-cnet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/aladdin-review-guy-ritchies-live-action-disney-remake-dazzles-surprises-cnet\/","title":{"rendered":"Aladdin review: Guy Ritchie\u2019s live action Disney remake dazzles, surprises     \u2013 CNET"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/movie\/aladdin\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">1992 version of Aladdin<\/a> is among Disney&#039;s most beloved animated movies, so it&#039;d be easy to dismiss <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/person\/guy-ritchie\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Guy Ritchie<\/a>&#039;s live action <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/movie\/aladdin-2019\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">remake<\/a> as utterly redundant.<\/p>\n<p>Luckily, Ritchie goes far beyond a straight copy and paste, opting to update the classic \u2014 based on a story from an Arabian folktale One Thousand and One Nights \u2014 with fancy CGI visuals, some very modern sensibilities and more depth added to the characters. The movie is in theaters worldwide now. <\/p>\n<p>The basic thrust of the story is pretty much as you remember it. Orphaned street urchin Aladdin (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/person\/mena-massoud\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mena Massoud<\/a>) falls for Princess Jasmine of Agrabah (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/person\/naomi-scott\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Naomi Scott<\/a>) after a chance encounter and finds a magic lamp containing a wise-cracking, wish-granting Genie.<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>\n<p>Princess Jasmine (right) and her handmaiden\/best bud Dalia (left) elevate this live action remake of Aladdin.<\/p>\n<p>                                                     Daniel Smith\/Disney                                                 <\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This version, however, gives Jasmine a much bigger role, making her the emotional heart of the story as she struggles in Agrabah&#039;s male-dominated hierarchy. It&#039;s a surprising turn that infuses the update with renewed relevance, aided by the addition of handmaiden Dalia (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/person\/nasim-pedrad\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nasim Pedrad<\/a>). This delightfully glib new character gets some of the movie&#039;s biggest laughs and a pretty heartwarming story of her own.<\/p>\n<p>We still spend most of the movie with Aladdin, a happy-go-lucky character without much depth \u2014 Massoud&#039;s acting has a showy Broadway quality to it, but he can belt out the tunes and leap around stealing only what he can&#039;t afford as well as his animated counterpart.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the charismatic Genie is the reason we&#039;re seeing this movie, and it&#039;s impossible not to compare <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/person\/will-smith\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Will Smith<\/a>&#039;s version with the late <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/person\/robin-williams\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Robin Williams<\/a>&#039; incredible 1992 portrayal. Smith is at his best when he puts his own energetic magic in Genie&#039;s corner, but he doesn&#039;t exude the same warmth as Williams did, and his magical shtick can be a bit of a sensory overload in live action. <\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/aladdin-review-guy-ritchie-live-action-disney-remake-dazzles-surprises\/\" alt=\"null\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cnet2.cbsistatic.com\/img\/azWelDLx64H8R1SYHhDesifXG88=\/1092x0\/2019\/05\/21\/ac5f4721-0511-47f6-8745-f4c0ad6cceed\/agl0580-pcomp-publicity-v02-1039-grd004-000000.jpg\" alt=\"null\"\/><figcaption>\n<p>Genie is pretty unsettled in blue.<\/p>\n<p>                                                     Courtesy of Disney                                                 <\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Genie still gets two of the movie&#039;s most fun songs; Friend Like Me and Prince Ali are amazing, noisy displays of pageantry. And a surprising romantic subplot proves rewarding as it explores a fresh aspect of his character. Unfortunately, his blue CGI look is a bit unsettling \u2014 get ready to breathe a sigh of relief whenever Smith adopts his natural skin tone to blend in.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/person\/marwan-kenzari\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Marwan Kenzari<\/a>&#039;s villainous vizier, Jafar, feels pretty flat and underwritten despite an attempt to reframe him as Aladdin gone down a dark path. He gets some cool outfits and creates some spectacular visuals toward the end, but it&#039;s too little, too late. <\/p>\n<p>His parrot pal, Iago, is much more realistic than Gilbert Gottfried&#039;s shrill portrayal in the original. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/person\/alan-tudyk\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alan Tudyk<\/a> opts for a subtle approach, giving the character a sinister edge and managing to display more personality than Jafar through squawked repetition of other characters&#039; lines \u2014 it&#039;s astounding a CGI parrot is more memorable than the movie&#039;s big bad.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/aladdin-review-guy-ritchie-live-action-disney-remake-dazzles-surprises\/\" alt=\"null\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cnet3.cbsistatic.com\/img\/D_ZG_7S79mAg9VR1eSbuSBEXzcw=\/1092x0\/2019\/05\/21\/24ae1d1b-7ef6-442f-8f1d-e51d1a638fdb\/al-17540rsm.jpg\" alt=\"null\"\/><figcaption>\n<p>Jafar isn&#039;t a terribly exciting villain, but his serpentine staff is cool.<\/p>\n<p>                                                     Daniel Smith\/Disney                                                 <\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Each character&#039;s choices feel more organic and logical than they did in the animated movie \u2014 it&#039;s clear screenwriters Ritchie and John August reverse-engineered their motivations and developed them.<\/p>\n<p>Jasmine&#039;s expanded role is a complete success, to the point the movie feels shallow when she&#039;s not the focus.
