{"id":120041,"date":"2019-05-16T17:00:59","date_gmt":"2019-05-16T17:00:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/training-britains-doctors-in-poland\/"},"modified":"2019-05-16T17:00:59","modified_gmt":"2019-05-16T17:00:59","slug":"training-britains-doctors-in-poland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/training-britains-doctors-in-poland\/","title":{"rendered":"Training Britains doctors \u2014 in Poland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WARSAW, Poland \u2014 Brexit uncertainty isnt stopping the U.K.s National Health Service from hiring doctors from beyond its borders \u2014 including from the EU.<\/p>\n<p>Enter firms like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paragona.com\/about-us\/paragona-in-60-seconds\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Paragona<\/a>, which calls itself \u201cthe leading global provider of international solutions to staff shortage problems for the healthcare sector.\u201d The Polish company won a contract with the NHS a few weeks agoas part of the health services \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/gp\/gpfv\/workforce\/building-the-general-practice-workforce\/international-gp-recruitment\/about\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">international GP recruitment program<\/a>,\u201d and is training its first batch of 100 EU doctors to practice in England.<\/p>\n<p>The general practitioners, who come from Spain, Lithuania, Greece and Poland, are enrolled at a campus in the small town of Piaseczno, 20 kilometers south of Warsaw.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe provide EU GPs with a 12-20 week residential course in Poland and when in the U.K., the doctors undergo additional training under the supervision of a mentor,\u201d Paragona Board Chairman Adam Ringer said.<\/p>\n<p>The training is intensive, with five-day, 40 hour-per-week courses that include simulated surgeries, language courses and classes on British culture.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n\u201cWhatever happens in relation to Brexit, the NHS will continue to need excellent doctors from all over Europe\u201d \u2014 <em>Rachel Souter, head of international recruitment at NHS England<\/em>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Conor Crowley, a teacher at the campus, highlighted how this is done. \u201cIn Leicestershire, for example, there is a different word for cabbage, and 200 local words, which a foreign GP will not be expected to know, but to be aware of,\u201d he said. \u201cSlavic culture is a bit more direct than the Brits tend to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Doctors are also made to watch classic British soap operas such as \u201cEmmerdale\u201d and \u201cCoronation Street.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The NHS has decided to throw (Brexit) caution to the wind because of an acute staffing crisis.<\/p>\n<p>While it is Europes biggest employer \u2014 with a workforce of 1.1 million \u2014 100,000 jobs are unfilled, 7,000 of them family doctor positions. The latest statistics show the health service had the equivalent of 28,596 fully qualified GPs working in England in December 2018 \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nuffieldtrust.org.uk\/news-item\/is-the-number-of-gps-falling-across-the-uk#key-points\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">593 fewer than 12 months earlier<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This has had a negative effect on patient care, as well as the wellbeing of medical professionals. \u201cUnfortunately, while workload in general practice is soaring we are hemorrhaging family doctors from the NHS,\u201d Helen Stokes-Lampard, chair of the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP), said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bma.org.uk\/collective-voice\/influence\/key-negotiations\/training-and-workforce\/medical-rota-gaps-report\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">There arent enough British doctors<\/a> to fill the gap, leading the NHS to launch its international recruitment scheme, a \u00a3100 million plan that launched in 2016 to find 500 family doctors from abroad to work in England by 2020. This target was increased to 2,000 in 2017. Eight companies are part of the agreement, with most based in the U.K.<\/p>\n<p>The initial focus has been on GPs from the European Economic Area, and Paragona is doing its best to attract doctors from across the Continent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring the course we provide accommodation, meals, sports activities, and grant scholarships for families,\u201d Kinga \u0141ozi\u0144ska, Paragona Polska CEO, said. The company also helps GPs with resettlement, finding a school and opening a bank account when they get to the U.K.<\/p>\n<p>However, none of the doctors enrolled wanted to talk about the course.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe GPs are a bit nervous about Brexit.
