{"id":119900,"date":"2019-05-07T16:42:38","date_gmt":"2019-05-07T16:42:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/facebooks-political-ad-rules-unchanged-as-election-looms-selmayr-complains\/"},"modified":"2019-05-07T16:42:38","modified_gmt":"2019-05-07T16:42:38","slug":"facebooks-political-ad-rules-unchanged-as-election-looms-selmayr-complains","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/facebooks-political-ad-rules-unchanged-as-election-looms-selmayr-complains\/","title":{"rendered":"Facebooks political ad rules unchanged as election looms, Selmayr complains"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Martin Selmayr is not pleased with Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>With a European Parliament election just weeks away, the social media giant has yet to change its cross-border political advertising rules to allow pan-EU campaigns by institutions and political parties, according to officials from the European Commission and the European Parliament.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo date, we have had no firm indication that the European Commission would be exempt from Facebooks single country approach for political advertisement,\u201d reads <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/SKM_C45819050711170.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a letter obtained by POLITICO<\/a> and sent by the Commissions secretary general Martin Selmayr to non-governmental groups that also complained about Facebooks ad rules.<\/p>\n<p>The letter comes after the social media giant faced a backlash  last month from the three main EU institutions \u2014  the Parliament, the Commission and the Council of the EU \u2014 because of its policy on cross-border political advertising. <\/p>\n<p>A group of NGOs, including The Good Lobby and Alliance 4 Europe, <a href=\"https:\/\/g8fip1kplyr33r3krz5b97d1-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Alemanno-Complaint-Facebook-Rules-EU-wide-ads-get-out-to-vote-.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">also wrote<\/a> to the Commission to complain about the restrictions, which de facto make campaigning across the European Union very difficult, if not impossible.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p> \u201cThere is no evidence that Facebook has corrected its rules, the status quo is in place\u201d \u2014 <em>Dara Murphy, European Peoples Party campaign manager<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Under the current <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/business\/help\/208949576550051?helpref=faq_content\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rules,<\/a> Facebook requires all advertisers to register in the country where they wish to purchase political advertising, as part of an effort to limit foreign influence in national campaigns.
