{"id":11946,"date":"2017-10-20T19:12:11","date_gmt":"2017-10-20T19:12:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/twitter-bans-hateful-display-names-reveals-safety-feature-update-timeline\/"},"modified":"2017-10-20T19:12:13","modified_gmt":"2017-10-20T19:12:13","slug":"twitter-bans-hateful-display-names-reveals-safety-feature-update-timeline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/twitter-bans-hateful-display-names-reveals-safety-feature-update-timeline\/","title":{"rendered":"Twitter Bans \u2018Hateful Display Names\u2019, Reveals Safety Feature Update Timeline"},"content":{"rendered":"<\/p>\n<h2>Twitter revealed it will be banning \u201chateful display names\u201d and published a timeline for future online safety policy changes.<\/h2>\n<p>TechCrunch <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2017\/10\/19\/twitter-bans-hateful-display-names-and-shares-safety-roadmap\/amp\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a> that Twitter has published a timeline of changes they plan to make to their Safety features, including the banning of \u201chateful display names,\u201d the implementation of \u201cwitness reporting,\u201d and changes to the content allowed on their platform. Twitter also apologized for its previous failure to prevent abuse on the platform: \u201cFar too often in the past we\u2019ve said we\u2019d do better and promised transparency but have fallen short in our efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Twitter plans to ban \u201chateful display names,\u201d and \u201cnameflaming,\u201d a method of ridicule where users will change their username to mock another Twitter user. Twitter also plans to better analyze the relationship between victims and \u201cabusers\u201d on Twitter to ensure that abuse reports are genuine and not a concerted attempt to shut down an alleged abuser\u2019s account over a disagreement. Twitter will also send notifications to third-party reporters of abuse on the platform in an attempt to make users feel safer.<\/p>\n<p>Twitter also plans to ban \u201cviolent group\u201d and \u201chate symbols\u201d on their platform. Such images will not be allowed in avatars or on profile banners and \u201csensitive content\u201d warnings will be added to any questionable material posted in tweets. Twitter also plans to work on stopping spam from spreading on the platform as well as using account relationship signals on user profiles to determine whether or not sexual advances are welcome.<\/p>\n<p>A full timeline for the rollout of these updates can be found below:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/media.breitbart.com\/media\/2017\/10\/screen-shot-2017-10-19-at-3-20-33-pm.png\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/media.breitbart.com\/media\/2017\/10\/screen-shot-2017-10-19-at-3-20-46-pm.png\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/screen-shot-2017-10-19-at-3-20-46-pm-1024x589.png\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Speaking to Wired earlier this week, a Twitter representative <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/here-are-twitters-latest-rules-for-fighting-hate-and-abuse\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a>, \u201cAlthough we planned on sharing these updates later this week, we hope our approach and upcoming changes, as well as our collaboration with the Trust and Safety Council, show how seriously we are rethinking our rules and how quickly we\u2019re moving to update our policies and how we enforce them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Twitter\u2019s head of policy wrote in an internal email, \u201cWe realize that a more aggressive policy and enforcement approach will result in the removal of more content from our service. We are comfortable making this decision, assuming that we will only be removing abusive content that violates our Rules.
