{"id":117558,"date":"2019-04-04T23:22:39","date_gmt":"2019-04-04T23:22:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/cats-recognize-their-own-names\/"},"modified":"2019-04-04T23:22:39","modified_gmt":"2019-04-04T23:22:39","slug":"cats-recognize-their-own-names","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/cats-recognize-their-own-names\/","title":{"rendered":"Cats recognize their own names"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Whether practical, dramatical or pragmatical, domestic cats appear to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-019-40616-4\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recognize the familiar sound of their own names<\/a> and can distinguish them from other words, researchers report April 4 in <em>Scientific Reports<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>While dog responses to human behavior and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencenews.org\/article\/dog-brains-divide-language-tasks-much-humans-do\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">speech<\/a> have received much attention (<em>SN: 10\/1\/16, p. 11<\/em>), researchers are just scratching the surface of human-cat interactions. Research has shown that domestic cats (<em>Felis catus<\/em>) appear to <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007%2Fs10071-014-0832-2\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">respond to human facial expressions<\/a>, and can <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007%2Fs10071-013-0620-4\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">distinguish between different human voices<\/a>. But can cats recognize their own names?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think many cat owners feel that cats know their names, or the word food,\u201d but until now, there was no scientific evidence to back that up, says Atsuko Saito, a psychologist at Sophia University in Tokyo and a cat owner.<\/p>\n<p>So Saito and her colleagues pounced on that research question. They asked cat owners to say four nouns of similar length followed by the cats name. Cats gradually lost interest with each noun, but then reacted strongly to their names \u2014 moving their ears, head or tail, shifting their hind paw position or, of course, meowing. The results held up with cats living alone, with other cats and at a cat caf\u00e9, where customers can hang out with cats.
