{"id":116717,"date":"2019-03-29T06:02:16","date_gmt":"2019-03-29T06:02:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/lloyds-of-london-loses-1bn-in-year-of-natural-catastrophes-2\/"},"modified":"2019-03-29T06:02:16","modified_gmt":"2019-03-29T06:02:16","slug":"lloyds-of-london-loses-1bn-in-year-of-natural-catastrophes-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/lloyds-of-london-loses-1bn-in-year-of-natural-catastrophes-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Lloyds of London loses \u00a31bn in year of natural catastrophes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/assets\/uploads\/main-image\/full_width_article_body_image\/deadline-for-firms-to-reveal-gender-pay-gap-941877670-5c9b3969a185b.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Insurance market Lloyds of London, currently embroiled in a sexual harassment scandal, said today it had made a loss of \u00a31bn for 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Lloyds said it paid \u00a319.7bn in claims last year, leading to an aggregate loss of \u00a31bn, down from \u00a32bn the year previously.<\/p>\n<p>The exchange had gross written premiums of \u00a335.5bn last year, up from \u00a333.6bn the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>Its combined ratio was 104.5 per cent, down from 114 per cent the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>The exchange blamed a tough year for natural disasters for its loss, with natural catastrophes such as hurricanes Florence and Michael, Typhoon Jebi in Japan and wildfires in California, costing \u00a32.9bn, above the long-term average of \u00a31.9bn.<\/p>\n<p>The results come in the context of a sexual harassment after a Bloomberg report last week described an atmosphere of \u201cnear-persistent harassment\u201d \u2013 one former employee said the exchange was \u201cbasically a meat market\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday the 330-year old market unveiled a \u201crobust plan\u201d to deal with sexual harassment, which includes making it easier for staff to lodge complaints and an independent survey on the companys culture and a review of practices.<\/p>\n<p>Chief executive John Neal, who took over from moderniser Inga Beale in October, said yesterday: \u201cNo one should ever experience harassment of any kind at work and it is distressing to hear that this is still happening.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Reacting to the results today Neal, said: \u201cThe markets aggregated 2018 results report a combined ratio of 104.5 per cent, and a \u00a31.0bn loss. This performance is not of the standard that we would expect of a market that has both the heritage and quality of Lloyds. We have implemented stronger performance management measures which will remain an enduring feature of how we go about our business.
