{"id":116036,"date":"2019-03-24T20:40:37","date_gmt":"2019-03-24T20:40:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/dont-treat-italy-like-greece-spains-borrell-tells-brussels-34\/"},"modified":"2019-03-24T20:40:37","modified_gmt":"2019-03-24T20:40:37","slug":"dont-treat-italy-like-greece-spains-borrell-tells-brussels-34","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/dont-treat-italy-like-greece-spains-borrell-tells-brussels-34\/","title":{"rendered":"Dont treat Italy like Greece, Spains Borrell tells Brussels"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The European Commission should not respond to the budget spat with Italy the same way as it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/greece-debt-bailout-the-greek-rorschach-test\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">treated Greece<\/a>, Spanish Foreign Minister Josep Borrell said today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt would be a big mistake for the European Commission to try to deal with Italy the same way they dealt with Greece, imposing a very tough constraint on the budget, a strong austerity policy, because Italy is not Greece,\u201d Borrell said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/event\/politicos-interview-with-josep-borrell-foreign-minister-of-spain\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">an interview with POLITICOs Ryan Heath<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Italian government, an alliance of the far-right League and anti-establishment 5Star Movement, wants to boost spending to kickstart the economy and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/italy-refuses-to-bow-to-brussels-budget-demands\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">flout EU fiscal rules<\/a>, risking a so-called excessive deficit procedure by the Commission that could result in fines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cItaly cannot afford a second recession,\u201d said Borrell, a veteran Socialist politician and former president of the European Parliament. \u201cI hope the Italian government and the European Commission will be able to slow down their mutual criticism and start a kind of agreement, Portugal-style.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Borrell said Spains Portuguese neighbors had secured sufficient fiscal flexibility from Brussels to put the economy on a path to growth, and he suggested that Spain, too, could benefit from such flexibility.
