The British government is examining the U.K.\u2019s financial commitments to the EU \u201cline by line,\u201d Prime Minister Theresa May told journalists before leaving the European Council summit in Brussels.<\/p>\n

EU leaders at the event said repeatedly that they require more clarity from the U.K. on divorce issues \u2014 especially Britain\u2019s financial settlement \u2014 before allowing Brexit talks to move on to trade.<\/p>\n

And in remarks which hint that May has not closed the door on making more financial concessions, she said: \u201cThere has to be detailed work on those commitments \u2026 We\u2019ll continue to go through them line by line.\u201d<\/p>\n

She reiterated the promise she made in her speech last month in Florence. \u201cNobody needs to be concerned with the current budget plan, that they will have to either pay more or receive less as a result of the U.K. leaving,\u201d she said, adding,\u201dWe will honor other commitments that we have made during our membership.\u201d<\/p>\n

The prime minister also emphasized that the U.K. will remain fully engaged in EU policy-making for \u201canother year and a half,\u201d pointing out that London is \u201cunconditionally committed to the security and defense of Europe.\u201d She also reiterated the U.K.\u2019s \u201cfirm commitment\u201d to the Iran deal.<\/p>\n

May said that \u201cwhatever happens, we want EU citizens and their families to stay [after Brexit].\u201d<\/p>\n
