{"id":109938,"date":"2019-01-04T16:40:33","date_gmt":"2019-01-04T16:40:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/wall-street-shares-plummet-after-apple-warning-over-china-slowdown\/"},"modified":"2019-01-04T16:40:33","modified_gmt":"2019-01-04T16:40:33","slug":"wall-street-shares-plummet-after-apple-warning-over-china-slowdown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/wall-street-shares-plummet-after-apple-warning-over-china-slowdown\/","title":{"rendered":"Wall Street shares plummet after Apple warning over China slowdown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wall Street shares have plummeted in response to Apples warning over a slowdown in China.<\/p>\n<p>All three major US indices tumbled on opening as Apples nine per cent fall caused another painful day for investors.<\/p>\n<p>The tech giant said lower demand for its products in China and the countrys economic deceleration were to blame for its second revenue warning late last night.<\/p>\n<p>The Dow Jones dropped more than 650 points and 2.8 per cent and was followed on the downward spiral by the Nasdaq \u2013 down 2.8 per cent \u2013 and the S&amp;P 500 \u2013 down 2.4 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>The S&amp;P technology sector fell 3.5 per cent, with chipmakers, which count both <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/company\/apple\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Apple<\/a> and China as major customers, weighing the most.<\/p>\n<p>IPhone suppliers including Qorvo, Advanced Micro Devices and Skyworks Solutions fell more than 7 percent.<\/p>\n<p>The selloff spread to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/ftse-100\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">FTSE 100<\/a>, which fell 0.6 per cent and to European markets, as the Eurostoxx dropped 1.2 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Luxury retailers were also hit by Apples warning of Chinese slowdown as analysts said investors were concerned Chinese consumers may lose their appetite for high-end brands.<\/p>\n<p>Ralph Lauren fell 3.2 per cent, while Tiffany &amp; Co dropped 4.2 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Burberry was the FTSE 100s second biggest fallers, dropping 5.3 per cent, and Mulberry shares slid 3.5 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInvestors are fearful the Chinese middle class might lose their appetite for Western luxury brands,\u201d CMC Markets analyst David Madden said.<br \/>AJ Bell analyst Russ Mould said mining firms and other companies \u201creliant on Chinese consumption\u201d were hit this morning by Apples warning.<\/p>\n<p>The FTSE 100 was trading 0.6 per cent down in the afternoon as the US markets dragged the index down from a position of parity.<\/p>\n<p>Next led the indexs risers, jumping five per cent on strong Christmas sales, followed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/company\/tesco\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Tesco<\/a> which rose 3.8 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Astrazeneca, Marks and Spencer and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/company\/associated-british-foods\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Associated British Foods<\/a> made up the top five.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest faller was steel and mining company <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/company\/evraz\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Evraz<\/a>, which dropped seven per cent, followed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/company\/burberry-group\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Burberry<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/company\/intertek-group\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Intertek Group<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/company\/antofagasta-holdings\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Antofagasta<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/company\/scottish-mortgage-investment-trust\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Scottish Mortgage<\/a> Investment Trust.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blockads.fivefilters.org\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/blockads.fivefilters.org\/acceptable.html\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wall Street shares have plummeted in response to Apples warn..<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":109939,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[202],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-109938","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-finance"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.9 -
