Such extremely energetic particles, if they exist, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencenews.org\/article\/hints-weird-particles-space-may-defy-physics-standard-model\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">could upend the standard model<\/a>, the theory that describes the elementary particles that make up matter (<em>SN: 10\/27\/18, p. 8<\/em>). Some physicists caution that the signals could have come from something more mundane, such as spacefaring particles called cosmic rays.<\/p>\n<h4>Starlight, star bright[hhmc]<br \/>\n<\/h4>\n<p>The first stars in the universe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencenews.org\/article\/universe-first-stars-born-big-bang\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">flickered on by about 180 million years after the Big Bang<\/a>, radio observations suggest (<em>SN: 3\/31\/18, p. 6<\/em>). Unexpectedly strong signals, picked up by a table-sized antenna in the Australian outback, hint at the earliest twinklers and what would be a new phenomenon in the early universe: hydrogen particles interacting with dark matter, the mysterious substance that makes up most of the matter in the universe.<\/p>\n<h4>Alzheimers goes viral[hhmc]<br \/>\n<\/h4>\n<p>Two studies add support for a connection between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencenews.org\/article\/alzheimers-herpesvirus-possible-link\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Alzheimers disease and herpesvirus<\/a> (<em>SN: 7\/21\/18, p. 10<\/em>). One group of researchers found more DNA from strains of the common virus in brains of Alzheimers patients versus healthy people; a second group says that amyloid-beta plaques in the brain, a hallmark of the disease, might be a protective reaction to pathogens like herpesvirus. But the connection, if any, remains unclear, and scientists emphasize that Alzheimers is not contagious.<\/p>\n<h4>Superconductor suspect[hhmc]<br \/>\n<\/h4>\n<p>A new hydrogen-rich compound may solve a big problem with superconductors <em>\u2014 <\/em>the materials have to be in a deep freeze to function. Two experiments found lanthanum-hydrogen compounds<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencenews.org\/article\/new-hydrogen-rich-compound-may-be-record-breaking-superconductor\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"> transmitted electricity without resistance<\/a> when squeezed between two diamonds at temperatures higher than seen before (<em>SN: 10\/13\/18, p. 6<\/em>). That would be a big improvement, researchers say, but the compounds havent yet been shown to expel magnetic fields as a true superconductor would.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sciencenews.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2018\/12\/122218_cm_bigiftrue_birdlungs.jpg\" title=\"&lt;b&gt;SET OF PIPES&lt;\/b&gt;  &lt;em&gt;Archaeorhynchus spathula&lt;\/em&gt;, a feathered bird that lived 120 million years ago, may have had a respiratory system similar to that of modern birds. ~~ J. Zhang\/IVPP Beijing\"\/><\/p>\n<h4>Bird breath[hhmc]<br \/>\n<\/h4>\n<p>Are white speckles in the chest cavity of a 120-million-year-old bird fossil <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencenews.org\/article\/first-scientists-spot-what-may-be-lungs-ancient-bird-fossil\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">traces of a respiratory system<\/a> similar to that of modern birds (<em>SN: 11\/10\/18, p. 12<\/em>)? If so, the fossil, found in China, could be the first to preserve lungs of a bird. Some paleontologists arent convinced, partly because its so rare for delicate lung tissue to survive fossilization.<\/p>\n<h4>Exomoon expectations[hhmc]<br \/>\n<\/h4>\n<p>The Hubble Space Telescope bolstered evidence of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencenews.org\/article\/hubble-may-have-spotted-first-known-exomoon\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">first known moon outside of our solar system<\/a> (<em>SN: 10\/27\/18, p. 14<\/em>). The researchers are cautiously optimistic. A dip in starlight observed earlier by the Kepler space telescope <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencenews.org\/article\/big-news-if-true-science-2017-yir\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">suggested the existence of a Neptune-sized moon<\/a> orbiting a gas exoplanet 8,000 light-years away (<em>SN: 12\/23\/17 &amp; 1\/6\/18, p. 23<\/em>). Hubble spotted the same dip and saw the planet passing in front of its star earlier than expected, suggesting something was tugging on the planet.
