Critics also fear the creation of \u201cdesigner babies,\u201d children edited to enhance their intelligence, athleticism or other traits.<\/p>\n<p>Facing his peers on November 28 in Hong Kong at the <a href=\"http:\/\/nationalacademies.org\/gene-editing\/2nd_summit\/index.htm\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">second International Summit on Human Genome Editing<\/a>, He explained his research. He also revealed that another woman participating in a gene-editing trial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencenews.org\/article\/researcher-defends-creating-crispr-babies-fails-quell-controversy\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">is in the early stages of pregnancy<\/a> (<em>SN Online: 11\/28\/18<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>He said his group used the gene-editing tool CRISPR\/Cas9 to disable the <em>CCR5<\/em> gene in the fertilized eggs that produced the babies, \u201cLulu\u201d and \u201cNana\u201d (not their real names). <em>CCR5<\/em> encodes a protein that allows the most common version of the HIV virus to enter cells. And there are easier and safer ways to avoid infection after birth.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers who saw Hes presentation were not convinced that he presented enough evidence to verify that the editing was successful and didnt damage other genes. Previous CRISPR\/Cas9 research has indicated that some cells in embryos may be incompletely edited or escape editing entirely, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencenews.org\/article\/crispr-gene-editing-human-embryos\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">creating a \u201cmosaic\u201d embryo<\/a> (<em>SN: 9\/2\/17, p. 6<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>In this case, incomplete editing might leave the children as vulnerable to HIV infection as if their DNA had never been altered. And taking a gene out of commission has risks: People with missing or defective <em>CCR5<\/em> genes are more susceptible to serious complications from West Nile virus infections.<\/p>\n<p>Even if the girls dont end up with any health problems as a result of Hes genetic tinkering, the experiment is still bad science, says Julian Savulescu, a bioethicist at the University of Oxford. \u201cI liken it to Russian roulette. You can pull the trigger and not kill, but that doesnt mean what you did was right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Within days of Hes announcement, Chinas Ministry of Science and Technology suspended work by He and his team at Southern University of Science and Technology in Shenzhen, China, stating that Hes actions \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/m.news.cctv.com\/2018\/11\/29\/ARTIqnwNDtHx6ThPOqqWDmzI181129.shtml\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">violated Chinas relevant laws and regulations<\/a>.\u201d Authorities are investigating further.<\/p>\n<p>Organizers of the summit called the work \u201cirresponsible\u201d and expressed doubt over whether the edits happened at all.
