A French tax on digital giants including Google and Facebook will enter into force on January 1, 2019, Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire announced<\/a> Monday.<\/p>\n

The government, which lobbied unsuccessfully<\/a> for a pan-European \u201cdigital tax,\u201d hopes the levy will bring \u20ac500 million per year into state coffers.<\/p>\n

Le Maire previously said that France would wait until March, 2019, before imposing a national taxto allow time for a possible Europe-wide tax.<\/p>\n

But in an interview given<\/a> on Sunday, following weeks of protests by the Yellow Jackets movement, Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said the government was ready to act sooner.<\/p>\n

The expected intake would help to offset the cost of measures taken to assuage the yellow vest protesters.<\/p>\n

Frances tax will be modelled closely after the European Commissions proposal, which was heavily influenced by Paris.<\/p>\n

Le Maire said that revenues generated \u201cby advertising, platforms and the selling of personal data\u201d would be targeted.<\/p>\n

A law could be included in a broader bill on modernizing the economy which is currently in discussion \u2014 known as the \u201cPACTE\u201d law \u2014 but there are other legislative options, the finance minister added.<\/p>\n
