U.K. Shadow Brexit Secretary Keir Starmer dismissed the draft Withdrawal Agreement<\/a> struck by EU and U.K. negotiators as \u201cinadequate in so many ways,\u201d and signaled that Labour would not back the deal.<\/p>\n

Starmer told the BBCs Today program Thursday that while he has yet to fully read the deal in detail, early indicators arent good, and \u201cif its not good enough, why on earth should Labour back it?\u201d<\/p>\n

The opposition Labour Party has said for months that it will not accept a \u201cvague or blind Brexit\u201d deal, Starmer said, adding there is \u201cnothing in [the draft deal] about a comprehensive customs union.\u201d<\/p>\n

The deal would effectively lead to a \u201ctrade agreement that makes it harder to trade, not easier to trade,\u201d Labours Brexit chief said.<\/p>\n

Referring to the section in the draft agreement on customs arrangements, Starmer noted that at first glance, it appears \u201cthere will be more friction at the border. It doesnt even use the phrase frictionless anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 585-page draft document<\/a>, agreed Wednesday, demonstrates that it is \u201cimpossible to replicate the benefits\u201d Britain now has in the European Union, Starmer said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy on earth would you back a deal as bad as this one?\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n
