Theresa May<\/a>s leadership of the country is hanging on a thin thread amid backlash of her Brexit<\/a> divorce plans.<\/p>\n

A Brexit withdrawal agreement has been drafted up, and the Prime Minister has faced backlash over numerous negotiation points, including the Irish backstop.<\/p>\n

Yesterday leading Brexiteer Jacob Rees-Mogg submitted a letter of no confidence in the Prime Minister.<\/p>\n

The government also started collapsing as several ministers resigned, including Dominic Raab<\/a> and Esther McVey<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Tory whips are believed to be returning to London and are expected to submit no-confidence votes.<\/p>\n

What is a no confidence vote?<\/h3>\n

A no confidence vote, or vote of no confidence, is triggered when Conservative MPs feel like they have lost confidence in their party leader.<\/p>\n

It can also be triggered by the Opposition, but this means they have little chance of succeeding.<\/p>\n

According to the Parliaments own website: \u201cA motion of no-confidence, or censure motion, is a motion moved in the House of Commons with the wording: 'That this House has no-confidence in HM Government'.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf such a motion is agreed to, and a new government with the support of a majority of MPs cannot be formed within a period of 14 calendar days, Parliament is dissolved and an early General Election is triggered.<\/p>\n

\u201cA motion of no confidence is one of only two ways in which an early General Election may be triggered under the terms of the Fixed Term Parliaments Act 2011.\u201d<\/p>\n

Has a no confidence vote been invoked previously?<\/h3>\n

The last Tory leader to step down due to a no confidence vote was Iain Duncan Smith in 2003.<\/p>\n

How is a no-confidence vote triggered?<\/h3>\n

In order for a no-confidence vote to go through, 15% of the Tory MPs have to write to the chairman of the 1922 Committee, Sir Graham Brady, to call a vote of no confidence.<\/p>\n

This means, currently, 48 of 316 Tory MPs need to back the motion.<\/p>\n

The 1922 Committee is made up of Tory backbench MPs.<\/p>\n

They meet weekly to discuss their views independently of frontbenchers.<\/p>\n

For a vote of no-confidence to take place the 1922 Committee have to decide whether it needs to be done or not.<\/p>\n

How likely is a vote of no-confidence?<\/h3>\n

Rees-Mong, MP for North East Somerset, believed the PM could be gone within \u201cweeks\u201d.<\/p>\n

He believes the necessary 48 letters to trigger a vote of no-confidence would be submitted.<\/p>\n

Dr Simon Usherwood, reader in politics at the University of Surrey, told iNews there are two questions to consider.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cAre there enough Tory MPs out there who are sufficiently upset by the situation to lodge a [no confidence letter]? And theres another question about whether it would be successful.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere probably are enough potential requests out there, but a lot depends on momentum.\u201d<\/p>\n

There is also the question of who would take over from May, as there is no clear alternative.<\/p>\n

Dr Usherwood continued: \u201cHer best line of defence is the lack of certainty that those trying to remove her would have about becoming more able to achieve their objectives.<\/p>\n

\u201cHowever, things are moving really quickly right now, so its not in anyones control.\u201d<\/p>\n

How would a no-confidence vote work with Theresa May?<\/h3>\n

If MPs decide for a vote of no-confidence, May would need over half of her Conservative Party to support her to remain in power.<\/p>\n

If this happens, there cant be another no-confidence vote for a year.<\/p>\n

On the flip side, if this doesnt happen, she would have to resign, and there would be a new contest for the next leader.<\/p>\n

Presumably, the next Prime Minister would be chosen by MPs, like when David Cameron stepped down after the Brexit vote in 2016.<\/p>\n

One of the final candidates Andrea Leadsom withdrew, and May became Prime Minister.<\/p>\n

However, if a new government cant be formed within 14 days of a vote of no-confidence, parliament is dissolved early.<\/p>\n

This would trigger an early General Election, according to the parliament website.<\/p>\n
