LONDON — Britain has appointed veteran diplomat Karen Pierce as its new ambassador to the United States.
The U.N. ambassador and security council representative said she was “honored” to take the job, adding: “There is a deep bond between Britain and the U.S., built on many pillars.”
Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said the government was “proud to be sending to Washington such an outstanding diplomat.”
Pierce replaces Kim Darroch, who was forced to quit the post in December after a damaging leak of diplomatic cables revealed his criticisms of President Donald Trumps administration.
She heads to Washington at a sensitive time for U.K. relations with the White House, with the two nations eager to strike a post-Brexit trade deal as soon as possible, despite tensions over numerous issues.
