The automatic tracking system for ships and boats to be used on the fishing vessel is one of the modern and advanced systems in the world of fisheries monitoring and tracking of fishing boats.

The installation of these devices, according to the newspaper, aims to determine the identity of the fishing vessel and its location by exchanging information electronically and automatically with the system’s base stations or satellites.

The monitoring process includes fishing fleets numbering more than 25,000 units including craft boats, artisanal fishing vessels, coastal fishing vessels and commercial fishing vessels in the fishing areas designated for each category of those fleets.

The project is in line with Oman’s 2040 vision, which aims to expand the exploitation of fisheries in economic waters and international waters in the Indian Ocean. It  aims to raise the contribution of the fisheries sector to the domestic product.

Fishing occupies an important place in the Sultanate’s economy. Many residents depend on this profession for their livelihood.

Fisheries provide job opportunities for thousands of citizens. And fish fill an important part of local consumption annually, and fish production is expected to reach 1.4 million tons by 2025.
