Boris Johnson and Michael Gove lead race to REPLACE Theresa May as PM

MPs failed once again to make any headway over Brexit as every single proposal was slapped down by the Commons.

Britain is now hurtling towards No Deal – with just 10 days to go before the UK is scheduled to leave the EU.

Hardline backbenchers in the Tories are refusing the compromise and May has lost control of the Conservatives.

Her leadership continues to hang by a thread as she prepares to make one final bid to push through her hugely unpopular Withdrawal Agreement.

Mays future in her job is now tied to her Brexit deal passing – and the candidates to be next PM are circling, with bookies handing the edge of Gove and Johnson.

And there is also the prospect of a snap General Election being called in a final bid for unity in the Commons.

Johnson would be seen as a champion of the hard-Brexit wing of the party and has regularly undermined May.

Gove meanwhile would be seen as a continuity candidate, having developed into a close ally of the PM.

Both heavyweights had once been chums, campaigning together under the banner of Vote Leave.

And then both also ran for leadership in the election which was won by May.

Boris was undercut by Gove at the eleventh hour, forcing him to pull out of the race – before the premiership was ultimately handed to May.

Leading bookies Ladbrokes have given both Brexiteers the same odds of 5/1 in being next Prime Minister.

Coral meanwhile have given the edge to Gove at 4/1, while Boris is 9/2.

“Michael Gove is proving to be very popular in our betting on who will take over from Theresa May as the next Prime Minister,” said the bookies spokesman John Hill.

“A general election looks very likely to happen in 2019, according to the betting, while the odds have been trimmed on the UK leaving the EU without a deal in April.”

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn – who is aggressively pushing for a General Election – is given shorter odds by both to be the next PM at 6/1.

Other leading contenders include former Brexit secretary Dominic Raab, foreign secretary Jeremy Hunt, and home secretary Sajid Javid.

Cabinet are meeting today in a marathon session of crisis talks in Downing Street to try and resolve Brexit.

And it comes after Nick Boles MP sensationally quit the party in a chaotic session of the Commons to calls of “dont go”.

If not compromise can be reached pressure is mounting for Britain to either apply for an extension to Article 50, hold a second referendum or a General Election.
