Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai called today for artificial intelligence to be regulated.

“There is no question in my mind that artificial intelligence needs to be regulated. The question is how best to approach this,” the tech giants chief executive said at a conference in Brussels.

The European Commission is scheduled to present a white paper on artificial intelligence, which will set the path forward for the next five years. An early draft showed that banning facial recognition in public places was an option on the table.

“While AI promises enormous benefits for Europe and the world, there are real concerns about the potential negative consequences of AI,” said Pichai, mentioning deep fakes and facial recognition.

The tech CEO acknowledged that the United States and the European Union were both starting to develop regulatory approaches on artificial intelligence, and called for “international alignment.”
