ALASTAIR CAMPBELL has sparked outrage as he attacked Boris Johnson and Dominic Cummings and accused the pair of being “liars”.

Alastair Campbell, Tony Blair’s former spin doctor, faced a backlash online after his attempt to discredit Boris Johnson and top adviser Dominic Cummings. While speaking on TalkRadio, Mr Campbell took aim at the pair for the controversy surrounding Mr Cummings allegedly breaking coronavirus lockdown rules. During a furious rant, the former communications chief questioned whether Mr Cummings had really suffered from COVID-19.

Mr Campbell said: “I even wonder if Dominic Cummings was even ill?

“As for his wife, the thing that goes to the heart of this.

“Let me just say this very bluntly, we are governed by a bunch of liars.

“Mr Cummings’ wife wrote a piece explaining she had spent the time in London lockdown, a very interesting choice of words.

“Just a pack of lies to defend the indefensible.”

Mr Campbell also dubbed Mr Johnson’s defence of Mr Cummings shameful.

He said: “Because of Boris Johnson’s indifference and callous incompetence in relation to the virus, tens of thousands more people have died than should have done.

“In undermining his own lockdown rules, which he has now done, he has put more lives at risk.

“That is utterly unforgivable.”

Listeners quickly took to Twitter to voice their frustration at Mr Campbell and with some claiming there was a great level of irony to his accusations.

A Twitter user wrote: “The irony of Alastair Campbell calling the Government liars, give me a break”.

Another added: “Alastair Campbell of all people is in no position to criticise anyone.”

A third person insisted the former Tony Blair adviser had lost the people’s trust many years ago.

He wrote: “Campbell fall out affected people’s trust in him decades ago. Now, here he is talking about liars lol.”

The comments from Mr Campbell came before Dominic Cummings delivered a statement at No 10 to explain his actions.

Almost 300,000 people signed a petition calling for his resignation despite the Prime Minister insisting his adviser did not break any rules and acted responsibly.

During his statement on Monday, Mr Cummings denied he had broken the “spirit” of the rules and said he had not offered his resignation to the Prime Minister.

He also said he drove with his family 250 miles from London to Durham during Britain’s lockdown because he had no reasonable childcare options if both he and his wife were seriously ill.

He added he could see why people basing their opinions on media reports of his actions could be furious.

Mr Cummings said that he tried to exercise his judgment the best he could, and believed he acted reasonably and legally.

Mr Campbell’s office was contacted for comment but was unable to respond in time for publication.
