Alarming rates of coronavirus transmission across Europe should “serve as a wake-up call,” said the World Health Organizations Director for European Hans Kluge, who warned countries not to cut the length of mandatory quarantine periods.

“We have a very serious situation unfolding before us,” Kluge said at an online press conference Thursday. “Weekly cases have now exceeded those reported when the pandemic first peaked in Europe in March.”

It the first time the number of weekly recorded cases in Europe has exceeded 300,000. In Europe, there have been a total 4,893,614 recorded cases of COVID-19 and 226,524 deaths.
