WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging services and claims to be used by more than a billion people around the world.

It is the second most popular messaging app available (after Facebook Messenger) and there are more than 70 million of those users in India alone.

You may be familiar with the grey and blue ticks that shows you whether your message has been sent, received or viewed by the person that you have sent it to.

If you are experiencing network problems, it may be advisable to download the latest version of WhatsApp (Picture: PA Wire)

But before the message has been successfully sent through WhatsApp, you may notice a square clock symbol at the bottom right corner – if you see this symbol, it may cause you some annoyance, but what does it mean?

You will usually see this symbol when your device is not connected to a network (WiFi or mobile data) and it means that your message still has not been sent as it is waiting for an appropriated connection to send or WhatsApp is waiting for enough internet bandwidth required to send your message to the server.

WhatsApp says that if you see a clock next to your sent message then there is probably an issue with your network connection.

They recommend to make sure that you have downloaded the latest version of WhatsApp and if the problem persists then you should follow these instructions below for your Android or iPhone device.

What WhatsApp recommends you do to fix the network problem on Android devices:

  • Open your phone’s Settings > tap Network & Internet > toggle to turn Airplane mode on and off.
  • Open your phone’s Settings > tap Network & Internet > Data usage > toggle to turn Cellular data on.
  • Open your phone’s Settings > tap Apps & notifications > App info > WhatsApp > Data usage > toggle to turn on Background data.
  • Open your phone’s Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi > toggle to turn Wi-Fi off and on.
  • Try connecting to different Wi-Fi hotspots.
  • Make sure Wi-Fi stays on during sleep mode.
  • Reboot your Wi-Fi router.
  • Contact your mobile provider and make sure your APN settings are configured correctly.
  • Upgrade your Android operating system to the latest version available for your phone.
  • If you’re having trouble connecting to WhatsApp while on a Wi-Fi network that you don’t normally connect to, contact the network administrator.
  • If you’re on a campus or corporate Wi-Fi that has firewall restrictions in place, contact the network administrator.
  • WhatsApp isn’t designed to be used with proxy or VPN services, so we can’t provide support for those configurations.

What WhatsApp recommends you do to fix network problem on iPhone devices:

  • Restart your phone, or turn it off and on.
  • Update WhatsApp to the latest version available on the Apple App Store.
  • Open iPhone Settings > toggle to turn Airplane Mode on and off.

  • Upgrade or restore your iPhone’s operating system to the latest version for your phone.
  • If you’re using an unlocked iPhone or a pre-paid SIM card, you might need to adjust your phone’s APN settings for your SIM card. Contact your wireless carrier for details and instructions.
  • If you’re having trouble connecting to WhatsApp while on a Wi-Fi network that you don’t normally connect to, contact the network administrator.
  • If you’re on a campus or corporate Wi-Fi that has firewall restrictions in place, contact the network administrator.
